Sankofa in the West African language of twi, which is spoken by the people of Ghana, translates in English to "Go back and fetch." This ancient wisdom sees the past as a space of learning, and encourages us to revisit the past to learn from our mistakes so we can move forward in progress. Although the saying speaks of looking back, it actually teaches us that the road to our future is contained within the lessons of our past.

Sankofa speaks of the recursive nature of events faced by each generation. The symbology of the bird bending back on itself represents the both the individual and the collective lessons we must learn, protect, and pass on. It teaches us that past events will return to ensure that we have learned their lessons, and that we should have a knowledge of self. Our story contains the seeds to a better tomorrow. Sankofa represents future generations, and the transfer of knowledge that allows us to make compounded improvements from one generation to another. These are the gifts we receive from our predecessors and pass on to our children.
